@olliehirstillustration was commissioned to create this conceptual illustration for @nature_the_journal on a neuroscience phenomenon called “representational drift”: where the specific patterns of brain activity that encode a memory or perception gradually change over time, even though behavior and the external environment remain perfectly constant. Neuroscientists think it might explain why we sometimes forget things!
